A confident video can make a complicated investment look easy. A screenshot of profits can make the decision feel urgent. Neither tells you enough about the risk.

The news

On 5 October 2026, SEBI announced its “Samajh Se Investing Simple” campaign under Project Jagrook, alongside the MUST initiative, a WhatsApp presence and other investor-education measures.

For readers, the practical question is what to check before the next tip turns into a transaction.

1. Check the person independently

If someone is offering investment advice or a regulated service, verify the relevant registration through official channels. Match the legal name and contact details. A registration number copied into a social-media biography is not enough on its own.

2. Explain the product in plain language

Write down what you are buying, how returns might arise, what fees apply and how you can exit. If those points remain unclear, pause.

A friend’s experience cannot establish whether the same product fits your goals, time horizon or ability to bear losses.

3. Question the promise

SEBI’s investor guidance flags assured or near-certain return claims as a warning sign. Pressure to act immediately deserves the same scrutiny.

Ask for the underlying documents rather than another testimonial. Be especially careful when an offer depends on secrecy, urgency or sending money to an unfamiliar account.

A useful habit

Before acting, write one sentence describing how you could lose money. If you cannot do that yet, you need a better explanation of the investment.
